According to the Michoacán Attorney General's Office, the attack occurred in broad daylight as the mayor and her husband were returning from a community meeting. Armed men on a motorcycle opened fire without saying a word. Both were killed instantly.

Gomez, of the Morena party, had reported threats from criminal groups in recent weeks. His murder brings to 23 the number of municipal officials killed in Mexico so far in 2025. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador condemned the crime and promised a “thorough” investigation, although civil organizations criticize the lack of protection for local authorities.

Residents of the municipality held a vigil in the main square, demanding justice and greater presence of the National Guard. The UN and the OAS have expressed concern over the deterioration of democratic security in the country, especially in areas controlled by drug trafficking.
